 | We are Mike & Cathy Wind, and we own and operate Windiana Farms, located in the prairie region of Southern Alberta. | |
Here we crop farm 4000 irrigated acres, growing potatoes, hay, grain and canola seed – and llamas, with Mike being the ‘crop boss’ and Cathy the ‘llama boss’.
We left a partnership and began this farm in 1989, looking to build a business that our family could be involved in. With the youngest of the seven children in school, Cathy started looking for a new challenge - something that could be done at home, in conjunction with raising the family and keeping farm books. Throughout the years this has worked well, with several of the children being involved in various ways and making great traveling companions on road trips.
After being introduced to llamas and making a few farm visits, we bought our first two llamas in 1996. Obviously, two was not enough and we began to add to the herd, adding quality bloodlines with diverse genetics. In the past 12 years we’ve acquired high quality full South American bloodlines to compliment strong North American lines. For the past number of years we have concentrated on adding and breeding for suri llamas. In the past year we have down-sized our herd, keeping only the very best suri breeding stock. Aside from striving to produce the very best we can, our strong moral business ethics insure that clients are treated fairly and in a way that we like to be treated ourselves.
We really enjoy the animals in the pasture, as well as our involvement in the industry and the many great people we have met through our participation at various llama events. With two sons joining us in our farming operation and no children left at home to join Cathy at the sales and shows, Mike is enjoying coming to more events and the socializing that goes with it. Who knows, grooming and pen clean up may still be in his future! In preparation for retirement, Cathy has bought a weaving loom and hopes to utilize the inventory of wonderful fibres produced throughout the years.
Stop by for a visit – we’d love to show you our herd and enjoy a coffee with you.
